Semiconductor Ceramics and Special Materials
Si3N4 Substrate
Silicon nitride can be used in semiconductor packaging, and silicon nitride substrates can be plated with thicker copper metal, offering better ampacity, which allows the products to be widely used in the hybrid electric vehicle/pure electric vehicle market.
Silicon nitride is a special material with a relatively high entry level, and there are very few suppliers with the capability to develop the technology.
Applications in electric vehicles, charging piles, and energy storage systems are growing year by year. According to TrendForce research, as the penetration rate of electric vehicles continues to rise, and vehicle architectures move towards 800V high voltage, the global demand for 6-inch SiC wafers in the electric vehicle market is estimated to reach 1.69 million pieces by 2025.
Each 6-inch SiC wafer produces 1,200 chips, while a 5.5” x 7.5” SiN substrate can accommodate 72 chips, requiring about 16 SiN substrates. By 2025, around half of the 1.69 million SiC wafers will be for power chips, therefore, the annual demand for SiN substrates is initially estimated to be about 13.52 million substrates.
